This picture represents the idea of quickness, because it has both radio waves and tidal waves. As seen in the blue waters on the bottom of the graphic. The constant radio waves represent the idea of infinity that this service is always going to be giving out waves over a period of time. While the waves of the water represent the more calming rhythmic effect waves have.

Orwell’s plot line in 1984 works like this wherein the government is always out for more power as represented by the constant waves always being sent out making sure everyone is being watched. The calm wave represents the rhythm at which the story moves which is up and down. And this wave structure will last for ever, or at least history has shown that a government by the people starts, they have their rise, their prosperity and either they fall or some big dictator takes over, and then it falls, and then a new society will pick up the ashes and continue that same rhythm. More specifically, the story starts with a depressing look at Winston’s bland life living under tyranny, but then we see him fall in love, and then get deceived by the government. Manipulation works the same way, as over time short wave lengths constantly pass through a citizens mind whether it be through radio, newspaper, or television. If they constantly keep repeating and making people believe in something, they will soon believe in it. However, it won’t happen over night, as the manipulation has to be smooth like an ocean wave.

This emblem is the stock exchange represented in terms of freedom instead of stock or money. It can also be interrupted as our culture as human beings. The stock rate rate is pasted over an American flag. The flag represents freedom and equality, while the stock rate shows the rhythm at which our freedoms are being regained and taken away by government or some other force. This shows that we always seem to have this constant rhythm of rights given and taken away. Just like with any good economy the key is to find the right balance between freedom and government so that we have a constant line. History has shown that we haven’t found this balance yet, but hopefully we will in the future. Usually the stock comes tumbling down like a stock crash.

The stock represents the speed at which tyranny comes, it slowly comes down first by manipulation until suddenly you are under the rule of a dictator. However, this picture more represents quickness as a rhythm rather than just a quality that represents being fast. Sometimes being quick and witty with words during the writing process as Winston does is good, but sometimes describing the a grueling situation in a slow manner fits better because in reality torture is slow and painful, and Orwell wants to reflect that in his writing. Not that Orwell’s content is painful, but you feel Winston’s pain when he is being tortured because the speed at which Orwell describes it.

This emblem represents visibility. The idea is that 10 is far away, but the key is to see it from far away like what Orwell does, because 10 is a very important number. Ten represents the door the next chapter as it is the first of the double digit numbers. It also ends the journey you were once on. Once you reach ten it’s time to make a decision and you have to be prepared, otherwise you’ll be swept up with the rest of the ill prepared people.

The 10 represents what Orwell senses in the future. He sees that something big is coming if we don’t do anything about it. He knows that in the future we have to be prepared to fight for our freedom. Orwell knows this from experience, as he’s seen the ten before by traveling to Spain during the Spanish Civil War. He knows the power the elite, which is represented by the ten can have. So the key is notice it in the future when it’s still a small problem, because once that elite ten gets too big, it will crush you and like Winston in 1984 it might be too late to turn around or escape.

In this emblem I took a picture of a window and meshed it together with a man who is holding an anvil over his arm. The window is the clarity and openness that Orwell’s writing represents. The light coming in represents the lightness of Orwell’s writing and the enlightenment from reading 1984. The man holding the anvil represents Orwell lifting up the heaviness of the world and presenting it us in the most clearest way possible. And what more of a clear way then on a sunny day with clear water and a wide open window!

Orwell’s writing reflects this emblem very well because he really does carry the weight of the world to us. Our job is to close the blinds or come out and help him or (at least praise him) at lifting the heaviness of the world which is injustice, fear, power, and all the other concepts represented in this book. Basically, it’s up to us change the world and to keep on reading 1984 even those we strain at seeing Orwell trying to lift the anvil from beginning to end.

The idea here is that that I’ve combined a worker person and a bee head to indicate the connection between the prole workers in this book. The workers have to be consistent, obedient and precise in order to get by in Oceania. It also relates to the hexagon shape that bees work in. The worker body represent the everyday, regular man who is stuck being a bee. Our hope is that the bee head eventually is outgrown and the person can one day be an ordinary worker.

The bee also represents fear, as many people are afraid of the stinger on a bee, but there’s something so tempting about the bee’s honey, although we may be afraid of their stinger. The idea here is that the worker has been taken over by this fear and has become part of what he feared and what he feared has become a part of him.

On a positive note, the bee also represents the writing of George Orwell which also tends to be precise and exact.

Inside the screen I inserted the “all seeing” eye seen on the American dollar bill. The idea is that Oceania is a surveillance state and the purpose of the television is to make sure all citizens stay in line. Also this all seeing eye is found on the rectangle shaped square, which again has four sides. As mentioned before, the dollar is used as a power symbol to control people. Overall, this emblem represents how the screens have power over the people.

I found this three square logo interesting because it represents both the number four and the number three. Multiplicity is based around the number four for this project, but I’d like to combine with number four because of how three is a pattern seen throughout 1984. There are three classes of people, inner class, outer class, and proles. There are also three parts of the book. Three seems to be an important attribute seen throughout 1984.

The idea of this logo is that people are working together to feed America and together they create this square. The square represents depth meaning those three people join and then more join after that. The hope being that all join together and create something that has a lot of depth. Allow 1984 is a very dark book, I’d like to take this opportunity to make it represent something that is positive. The positive part is that Orwell has the ability to create his own world by linking characters together and by creating his own language and government. This ability alone is amazing when as it is done with so much logic and reality that it seems real.

In relation to Orwell, the Big Ten represents an elite class, just like what Orwell is trying to visualize in his novel, 1984. Orwell tries to visualize what the most elite type of government would be like. Who would control it? And how would the people react?

In this picture the ten different shades of colors represents each school but it comes together as one organized design.

Visibility should be represented by ten because it pushes our senses to the next level. MacNab points out that ten brings us to the next level of double numbers. It’s like an eye that allows us to see into the next dimension. The same way our eyes allows us to see what is around us, or our nose allows warns us what is coming up a head.

Orwell is making visible the future of any country that doesn’t question it’s government. Back in 1948 when Orwell wrote this novel, world war two was just ending and a new era was coming upon us. Just like our nose senses a smell before it what ever is producing that smell comes into the room Orwell sensed and visualized tyranny. He didn’t like what he saw around him, but what he produced in 1984 is just an example of what the future might be like.

Visibility deals with arousing the senses of the reader through metaphors, tropes, and analogies. Throughout 1984 I noticed a lot of detailed descriptions of characters’ faces. For example, he writes, “Her face had turned a milky yellow colour against which her mouth stood out redder than ever.” The face contains so many emotions, which is probably why Orwell chooses to put so much detail into describing them. Words can only say so much, but the emotions in a person’s face can so much more. A person’s face can show emotion by the way he or she smiles, whether that be sincerely, ironically or they have an evil grin. Pain or sadness can be seen in the way Orwell describes the redness in the face.

Characters are developed not only by what they say, but by their actions and emotions, and how he details the faces and how they react to situations is how we gets to know the characters Orwell creates. It’s amazing because in a tyrannical world people can say so little, so people’s emotions become much more important.

Orwell isn’t one to use many metaphors or other tropes in his writings, but what he represents is reality. Orwell tries to stay away from language that is not too clear because he wants his message to be seen in the most visible manner possible. So, the way in which Orwell attaches to the visible is by writing about feeling and emotion in a real matter as if he’s reporting on the government as a journalist. He has an experience as a journalist having wrote articles and the non-fiction book Homage to Catalonia which was his account of Spain’s Civil War, so his writing is straightforward because the ideas speak so much more.
